I am giving this book a 0 star rating. This is the story of Sophie Scaife and Neil Elwood. They met in an airport due to a delay and had a one-night stand. Six years late they came face-to-face when Neil became Sophie's new boss. Under her suggestion, she proposed they have a sexual relationship. They were to keep their business and personal lives separate and to not have emotions. This is the story of their failure to do that.The character development was lacking. Sophie was a follower. She knew that about herself at the beginning of the story. However, the author switched gears and tried to make her seem like an independent woman. One minute she needed directions to basically find the bathroom and then the next second she is a new age woman that does not need help from anyone.
Sophie's thinking was twisted and her priorities were misdirected. When her former boss is fired and she finds out Neil is her replacement, her concern is not whether she still had a job but whether Neil remembered her and their time together. She was agitated and that was all she worried about. Something was wrong with her reasoning skills. She showed her stupidity when she suggested to have a sexual relationship with her boss. Just craziness!!! And also, Neil is 24 years older than she is, so she has daddy issues since her dad left her when she was 2 years old. Instead of worrying about the age difference, she would bring up irrelevant concerns like how rich he was or what he was doing and the direction he was taking with the business he bought. She made no sense at times.
I had low expectations of these characters. They, in my opinion, were blank characters. There was nothing spectacular or memorable about them. They seemed to devolve throughout the story. Sophie started to act like a irresponsible teenager. She started to act impulsively and not making smart decisions. I caught a red flag early on that she was a whore. She was also immature. I felt she was comfortable being treated like a whore and not a lady. Neil was having a mid-life crisis after his divorce.
I did not feel the chemistry between Sophie and Neil. I did not feel it at all. The author was pushing something that clearly was not established. They fell in love with each other too soon. She fell in love with him in a month's time and he fell in love with her the one time they were together six years ago. That part of the plot was ridiculous.
The book was boring and it dragged on to infinity. It became a cliche towards the end and it ended on a cliffhanger. I would definitely not recommend this book.

I'm not a huge fan of billionaire romances. Still, that book was one of the first BDSM romances I read years ago, after FSOG as I desperately needed some antidote. The Boss was pretty much advertised as anti FSOG and it suited me perfectly. Eventually, I grew tired of the series and stopped reading after Book 3 but I still love The Boss.
The characters were well-written and I liked being in Sophie's shoes. I could identify with her ambition and drive, with her need for independence and how it clashed with the deeply submissive desires she was harboring. Neil was also not the typical billionaire, he was very level-headed, calm and collected. The emotional connection he built with Sophie was strong but didn't stop him from doing the right decision when it was necessary. Their bedroom games were smoking hot. I liked that the author wasn't shying away from more intense pain play and focusing on the S&M aspects of the BDSM. The pleasure and pain were a delicious combination.
The rest of the characters were also pretty awesome and not just there to fill space. I appreciated the friendship between Holli and Sophie and how they were building each other up even in the hardest moments. (Seriously, we need more strong friendships in romance.)
The strong plot and conflict that threatened to keep the characters apart kept my interest and made me want more with every flip through the screen.
Overall, it was a very pleasant and hot read and I'd recommend it to anyone who needs a gateway book for BDSM erotic romance.
This was my first ever Abigail Barnette novel and I was delighted it is well-written, but surprised it is a May/December novel. The heroine is the hero’s junior by 24 years. That made me pause. But the more I read, the more I liked it, and I forgot the age difference. The main and secondary characters, the pacing, the chemistry, the tension, the overall storyline are all really well done. I like both the hero and the heroine and can’t fault them. And if you are looking for a steamy romance, you’ll get it here.
This is not a standalone and I didn’t know it going in. That’s my fault because I didn’t research. It’s one of six, (yes SIX novels SO FAR) not including a prequel novella. I don’t know that I have the stamina for that many books about one couple, but here, the build-up to the cliffhanger and the cliffhanger itself was expertly done and my heart is currently aching wondering how the heroine and hero will handle the next stage of their lives. I'm looking forward to the second book.
My recommendation is if you can get over the age difference, navigate through the sexual athleticism, and the fact of the cliffhanger ending, you’ll enjoy this novel.
I liked this author’s writing so much I looked for some stand-alones/shorter series to read and found plenty I can choose from.
It's not often that you find a work of romance/erotica as well done as this. Not only are the sex scenes amazingly hot, but the characters are well developed and seem like real people, not caricatures. Unlike the Popular Book Series That Shall Not Be Named, this actually portrays a good relationship with proper communication, boundaries, and an equal partnership even with the economic/age disparity. The D/s aspects of the story make sure to stress concepts like consent, safewording, and aftercare. The wealth of likeable and love-to-hate characters span a wide range of diversity and don't fall into the usual clichés you'd expect from this kind of story, which is refreshing and wonderful.
The only thing I wasn't fond of is the (no spoilers) plot twist at the end. I saw it coming a mile off, and it seemed like a somewhat unlikely occurrence that got shoehorned in to create drama enough for a cliffhanger ending.
That being said, this is an excellent read and I fully expect to pick up the rest of the series at some point. Please, for the love of good writing, just stop waffling and read this book.
